Will AI Kill Jobs?

AI is now at the center of our lives and is changing how we work. But this is not the end of professions. On the contrary, it is changing them.

will ai kill jobs

Lately, there has been a serious storm around artificial intelligence and professions. On one side, we are facing fascinating developments, on the other side, the question of “will it take our jobs?” keeps bothering people. In this post, I will look at whether AI is a threat or an opportunity, through the eyes of a software developer and a designer.

Is Artificial Intelligence Omnipotent?

Yes, I admit it, the level artificial intelligence has reached is really impressive. It writes code, generates visuals, gives suggestions, catches bugs. But. there is always a “but”.

No matter how advanced it gets, artificial intelligence is still behind human abilities like creativity, intuition and reading context. When writing code, it cannot grasp complex business logic, it cannot fully understand client expectations, and sometimes it can even miss the most basic mistakes.

So tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can give us a perfect skeleton, but the soul that will keep it standing still lies in the developer’s experience.

The same is true for graphic design. Midjourney, DALL·E or similar tools can give you amazing visuals. But these visuals often lack a creative concept, have no context, and consist of random aesthetic elements.

Any design that does not touch the client’s brand and does not speak to the target audience eventually becomes trash. At this point, the eye of a graphic designer is needed to keep the work alive. For example, we can create very nice visuals for a product, but the font in the background does not support Turkish characters. While this does not seem like much of a problem for people, in the professional sector it becomes a very big problem.

Right now, we turn an image taken with a phone into something close to a professional sector design with just one line of text, and people say this means the profession will end. In fact, instead of ending the profession, it speeds up the existing profession, provides more job opportunities, and creates more lines of work.

Artificial Intelligence Is Not Bad, It Is Just Not Enough Yet

I am not against artificial intelligence. On the contrary, I get more excited every day about the possibilities it offers. Every day I use a different AI tool. In fact, I fixed the Turkish characters and other mistakes in the text you are reading right now with it. But we also need to not ignore this fact: when it comes to artificial intelligence and professions, it is not possible to say this technology is “enough on its own” yet.

Human qualities like creating, empathy, critical thinking still stand outside artificial intelligence. So instead of fearing that “robots will take our jobs”, we need to ask, “how can we use them to do better work?”

More job opportunities, more lines of work

  • The good thing is this, the “incomplete” state of AI actually opens the door to brand new professions. My personal view is that, along with this, the following will happen;
  • There will be more demand for experts who will review AI generated code, optimize the process, and adapt the results to real world scenarios.
  • Making systems work ethically and safely will become one of the most critical tasks in the future.
  • Engineers who can work with different systems and integrate AI features into daily workflows will be sought after.
  • People who analyze and improve the user experience and conversion rates of designs will now be in a critical position.
  • Original visual strategies that blend brand identity with AI visuals will be created.
  • A new generation of art directors who will guide AI supported visuals with creative vision will emerge.

Conclusion: Do Not Fear AI Ending Your Profession, Prepare for AI

Artificial intelligence is now at the center of our lives and is changing how we work from the ground up. But this is not the end of professions. On the contrary, it is transforming existing professions, making them more efficient and creative, and creating new areas of expertise.

Especially for those working around artificial intelligence and software, this period is an opportunity. Because no matter how advanced AI gets, there will always be a need for people who can shape it, guide it, and use it correctly.

Instead of fearing this transformation, understanding it and being ready for it is the only way to make a difference. AI is not your enemy, if you use it right, it can be your strongest work partner.
