Santa Ruins and Stone Bridge in Gümüşhane
On our trip to Gümüşhane, we had the chance to visit the Santa Ruins and the Stone Bridge.

On our trip to Gümüşhane, we had the chance to visit the Santa Ruins and the Stone Bridge. These two historical places show the region’s rich cultural heritage and offer visitors an unforgettable experience.
My first stop was the Santa Ruins. This historic settlement, located in Gümüşhane’s Dumanlı Köyü, was founded by Greeks in the 17th century. Santa consists of 7 neighborhoods and about 300 stone houses. When I arrived in Dumanlı Köyü by car, Santa’s stone houses and narrow streets first amazed me. These stone houses take you back in time like a time tunnel and reveal the architecture of the period.

While walking through the Santa Ruins, I came across a different historical structure at every corner. One of the most impressive buildings was St. Theodoros Kilisesi. This church stood out with its stonework and the frescoes inside. When I went inside, I was quite impressed to see that the historical texture had still been preserved. The frescoes on the church walls gave important clues about the religious and cultural life of the time. While touring the church, I felt like I was part of history.
Another striking structure in the Santa Ruins was St. Kyriaki Kilisesi. This church, just like St. Theodoros Kilisesi, stood out with its stonework and the decorations inside. While walking around the church, it was also possible to see the remains of monasteries and other churches. These structures showed that Santa was an important religious center in the past.

Before leaving the Santa Ruins, I also wanted to explore the natural beauty around it. The area where the ruins are located was surrounded by greenery and forests. When these natural beauties came together with the historical texture, the Santa Ruins turned into an open-air museum. While walking in nature, I found peace accompanied by bird sounds and the rustling of trees.

After visiting the Santa Ruins, I turned my route to the Stone Bridge. This historic bridge, located near Cebeli Köyü in Gümüşhane’s Torul district, is an important structure from the Ottoman period. When I arrived at the Stone Bridge, the bridge’s single-arch structure and stonework amazed me. The bridge stood in the middle of nature like a work of art.
While crossing the Stone Bridge, the sound of the stream flowing under the bridge and the beauty of the surrounding greenery amazed me. The bridge has been an important point on caravan and trade routes throughout its history. This made the bridge’s historical value even greater. While walking on the bridge, I felt as if I was following the footsteps of travelers from the past.

While walking around the Stone Bridge, I enjoyed the beauty nature offers. The area where the bridge is located had a peaceful atmosphere with greenery and the sound of water. Walking in this setting was good for both my body and my soul. The coolness of the stream flowing under the bridge brought a refreshing feeling on a hot summer day.

The nicest thing about these two beautiful historical structures is that there are no restaurants or similar businesses around them. No one has turned these places into commercial income and damaged their historical character. If you have time, I recommend going as soon as possible and enjoying nature.
The Santa Ruins and the Stone Bridge are only a few of the unique beauties Gümüşhane offers for history and nature lovers. While these two places shed light on the past with their historical texture, they also offer peace to visitors with their natural beauty. I recommend anyone visiting Gümüşhane to definitely see the Santa Ruins and the Stone Bridge. These historical and natural treasures will help you make unforgettable memories and explore Gümüşhane’s rich cultural heritage.
